Beating Maths Exam Anxiety: A Parent's Guide

22 June 2026 · 5 min read

Some students know the material cold and still freeze in the exam. Maths anxiety is real, and it costs grades — but it's very manageable.

Preparation is the best cure

Nerves shrink when a student has done enough past papers that the exam feels familiar. Confidence comes from repetition, not pep talks.

Teach a "stuck" strategy

Panic usually starts on one hard question. Teach them to leave it, bank the easy marks elsewhere, and return with a calmer head.

Simple in-exam techniques

  • Slow, deep breaths before starting reset the nervous system.
  • Start with a question they know they can do to build momentum.
  • Read every question twice before writing.

Keep perspective at home

Reassure without piling on pressure. A child who feels their worth doesn't hinge on one exam performs far better in it.
