IGCSE vs A-Level Maths: What Actually Changes
Plenty of students who breezed through IGCSE maths hit a wall at A-Level. The content isn't just harder — it's a different kind of thinking.
Depth over breadth
IGCSE covers many topics at a moderate depth. A-Level goes far deeper into fewer ideas, so half-understanding no longer gets you through.
Algebra becomes the language
At A-Level, fluent algebra is assumed in every topic. Weak algebra from IGCSE quietly holds back calculus, mechanics and everything else.
Proof and rigour
You're now expected to justify why, not just compute. "Show that" and "prove" questions become routine.
How to bridge the gap
Spend the summer before A-Level nailing algebra and surds, and get comfortable being challenged. A few focused tutoring sessions early prevent months of struggle later.
