How to Help a Child Who Hates Maths

28 June 2026 ยท 6 min read

"I'm just not a maths person" is almost never true. It usually means a child hit a gap, felt lost, and decided the subject was the enemy. The good news: that belief can be reversed.

Find the moment it went wrong

Most maths struggles trace back to one missed foundation โ€” often fractions, negatives or algebra. Fix that, and the topics built on top suddenly make sense.

Rebuild with quick wins

Start below their current level so they succeed easily, then climb. Confidence grows from getting things right, not from being pushed.

Change the language at home

  • Swap "you're bad at this" for "you haven't learned this yet".
  • Praise effort and strategy, not just correct answers.
  • Never share your own "I hated maths" stories โ€” kids absorb them.

Get the right support

A patient tutor who explains clearly and never makes a child feel stupid can turn maths from dreaded to manageable โ€” often faster than parents expect.
